Tert-butylalcohol (TBA, Tert-butylalcohol), also known as trimethylmethanol, 2-methyl-2-propanol, etc., forms four isomers of butanol with n-butanol, isobutanol, and secondary butanol. The pure product is colorless crystalline, colorless volatile liquid in the presence of a small amount of water, has a camphor-like odor, is hygroscopic, flammable, and has a higher toxicity and narc-otic than other alcohols. Soluble in most organic solvents, such as alcohols, esters, ketones, aromatics and aliphatic hydrocarbons, and water can form an azeotrope. These properties make tert-butanol a useful solvent and additive and one of the petrochemical products with a wide range of applications.
